This recipe for garbanzos y espinacas, the typical dish from Sevilla, is really good: http://www.barriosantacruz.com/recetas/espinacas.htm. I also added ground black pepper, onion, green pepper, and a little tomato. I didn’t boil the spinach first; I just added it to the mixture when I added the cooked chickpeas. Though it’s a little more time-consuming to fry and mash up bread and garlic, it’s definitely worth it. It makes all the difference!

I met the man who cultivates the beautiful vegetables by my house. He sells them every Friday at the market, but he also will sell them to you if you catch him at work in the field.

There’s this plot in the middle of the city 5 minutes from my house. No sign. No one ever there when I walk by. Pretty small for a business, pretty big for a family. I want to know more about it! And I want to work on it in exchange for some veggies!
In other news, I got a field guide to the wild mushrooms of Avila from the library. Studying up in preparation for the foraging season—autumn here.

Actually, I don’t see many apple trees here in Madrid. But my flatmate has been bringing home lots of apples from her pueblo in Segovia. Also walnuts! As you can see in the picture, these are not your perfect supermarket apples. But they’re great for making cake and applesauce! (Made with love by other flatmate, Rebe.)

This video will show you how to flip a tortilla. By the way, don’t cook tortilla in the oven.
ETA: One reader asked, “Why doesn’t she just flick her wrist to flip the tortilla, like you would with a pancake?”
Tortilla is much thicker and heavier than the average pancake. It often contains large chunks of potato and onion, plus the egg is rather liquidy, so it’s not as cohesive as a pancake. But if you think you can flip a tortilla pancake-style, I’d like to see it. Post a link to video in your comment.
